THE innocens project

The Innocens Project is a Research and Development Project that originated in 2018 at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the University Hospital of Antwerp (UZA).

Innocens is an acronym that stands for Improving Neonatal Outcome with a Clinical Early Notification System.

Together with a leading academic partner (AdREM Lab - University of Antwerp) and a large industry partner (IBM) we aim to develop a Clinical Decision Support System based on Artificial Intelligence technology.

In 2020 we reached a critical milestone in the development of a predictive model for Late onset Sepsis/ Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC). The model achieved a clinically pre-defined target treshold for performance of both sensitivity and precision during k-fold cross-validation on a large retrospective data repository.

In 2021, our the trained model was integrated in the Innocens solution prototype providing real-time inference at the bedside.

The technology is currently undergoing stability and user acceptance testing.
